Yawuru & Djugun Country (WA)

YAWARDANI JAN-GA

Yawardani Jan-ga (horses doing healing) responds to the urgent needs of Aboriginal young people across the Kimberley. The program harnesses the healing power of horses through innovative experiential learning to help heal trauma, enhance social and emotional wellbeing, nurture leadership, and promote positive relationships for Aboriginal children and young people.

Yawardani Jan-ga takes their program across the Kimberley to assist in nurturing Aboriginal young people aged 6-26 years through life's challenges and leadership development. With their Aboriginal equine team, they aim to support the amazing qualities within each participant through Country-based, equine-assisted learning.

Our activities

Yawardani Jan-ga's Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) program takes a strengths-based, person-centred approach for delivering enhanced social and emotional wellbeing support for Aboriginal young people.

The main delivery is their Youth Program, which is a tailored space that involves up to 10 sessions of 1 hour per week with re-referral available if required. It involves activities such as grooming, leading, haltering and specifically safe and structured time interacting with horses. Young people are guided through these different experiences with the horses, designed to increase mindfulness, self-awareness, confidence, regulation, and learning to respond rather than react. Every session is different, where staff teach young people about working with horses, yarn about learning and their life experiences, where participants become better equipped to handle other challenges in everyday life. They provide community and carer/parent feedback at critical points along the sessions with open invitation for family engagement at any time.

Yawardani Jan-ga offers 1:1, paired and group sessions and caters for schools, community groups and workplace professional development programs for multiple purposes such as leadership, youth empowerment, professional development, and community awareness through open days and demonstrations. Additionally, they train Aboriginal community members through their Aboriginal-specific EAL curriculum, creating meaningful career pathways in the wellbeing space.

All activities are designed to support Aboriginal young people in making and owning their decisions. And having their programs on Country provides a unique opportunity for participants to connect with Country, the horses, and themselves - strengthening self, increasing mindfulness and bringing about positivity.

Our impact

Since launching five years ago, Yawardani Jan-ga has supported over 2,500 Aboriginal young people. Community support has grown over the years from witnessing transformation, growth and change within local families. They have changed the trajectories of hundreds of Aboriginal young people at critical intervention points, achieving breakthroughs where conventional therapeutic programs had not succeeded. Through consistent Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) sessions, participants build confidence, trust in their leadership style and strengthen their ability to cope with life's challenges.

Yawardani Jan-ga's evidence-based approach has positioned them as leaders nationally and internationally in solution-focused, community-led youth programming that delivers real results. Yawardani Jan-ga has been recognised with the Youth Focus Innovation for Change Award at the Western Australian (WA) Mental Health Awards in 2021, as well as the Australian Mental Health Prize's Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander category in 2024.

Despite growing demand across the Kimberley and beyond, funding and capacity constraints limit Yawardani Jan-ga from expanding their programs to different regions and meeting requests and needs from community.
