REDFERN YOUTH CONNECT

Since 2014, Redfern Youth Connect (RYC) has filled a critical gap in Aboriginal-led early intervention within the community. RYC's community-based, after-hours program supports young people (aged 10-18) six days every week. The organisation provides a safe space where they can access the right support and build the skills, confidence and capabilities to plan for their future. For young people at higher risk of the justice system, RYC delivers targeted programs that guide them toward positive choices and better outcomes.

"We have identified that our young mob go to school and go to class but will disengage with what is being taught as they do not understand. They are then labelled with a behavioural tag which then puts them on the pathway to behavioural schools which are statistically shown for our young mob to end up in juvenile justice system. Before RYC, no services existed in Redfern to support young people to stay engaged with education, and plan for a brighter future." - Margaret Haumono, Co-Founder & Executive Director at RYC (Wiradjuri & Gomeroi)

Our activities

Drop-in Centre

At the heart of RYC sits the Drop-in Centre - a youth-led program where young Aboriginal leadership teams guide their peers and activities. Operating after school and on weekends, the program provides young people with meals, educational tutoring support, and safe transport home. The Drop-in Centre operates on a cultural kinship model, embedding Aboriginal ways of connecting and caring throughout the program.

Education Engagement

RYC has a Youth Education Officer that supports their kids at school - this position was created by the parents and children of our community for our kids.

Tutoring

RYC delivers consistent educational support through tutoring sessions three days per week during school terms at the Drop-in Centre, ensuring young people receive the educational support necessary to remain connected and build confidence.

Young Mob Fitness

Young Mob Fitness runs throughout school terms, engaging young people in sport, gym training, and community competitions. The program promotes healthy balance, physical activity, stress relief and positive peer connection through sport and fitness.

Redfern Youth Connect is Aboriginal and youth-led. They have junior and senior leadership teams which decide on strategy and how they want to create impact in the space. They are governed by an Aboriginal Board of Director's that is transitioning into a young adult cohort with Elder leadership - to align for succession planning.
